Almost every action like deletion can be undone.Navigation made easier with bookmarks, user-defined GoTo buttons, and a history of “Recently-visited directories”.Up to 26 four-pane tabs with unique orientation in each.Multi-pane, detailed-list file manager without bloat.Currently it is available for Linux but seeing that it is written using wxWidgets I guess it can easily support Windows too. 4Pane along with its nice looks and features is the closest to what I want. Tabbed interface helps to some extent but I don’t like that extra click to select a new tab every time. I was looking for a similar file browser on Linux with quad panes so that I can access multiple directories at once. If you’ve ever used Q-Dir on Windows you already know how useful a quad-pane file manager is for power users. With tiny size, light resource footprint and native portable option it is also good to carry on flash drive or quickly fetch from Internet.4Pane is a very powerful quad-pane file manager. Q-Dir is freeware that is probably best fit for users that find Explorer no longer sufficient but have no background, resolve or need to move into realm of more powerful solutions. On other hand it is extremely mouse-driven (as is Explorer) and oblivious to polished and efficient hotkeys of dual-pane file managers. This makes it very fast, responsive and zeroes learning curve. completely ignores classic dual-pane paradigm even if some layouts look close.deviates furthest from Explorer without dropping it.Q-Dir is one of the most original file managers I know: Other customizations like color schemes and tweaks for some interface elements are available.īut on inside it functions and feels exactly like Explorer. There is also interesting option to save current layout and paths into file on desktop. There is large number of different layouts that can be quickly chosen with buttons in toolbar. Simply put Q-Dir combines several (1-4) Explorer windows in single interface and surrounds with some nifty additional functions. Q-Dir goes further by incorporating Explorer windows in its interface. There are numerous apps that try to improve Explorer via toolbars and other interface extensions. For all interface decisions, standard experience and many years of development it is still unfitting for anything but basic tasks. I always have mixed feelings about Explorer – Windows native file manager.
